Lyrics to September Snow
Dogs barking in the middle of the night
Wake me up from sleep that ain’t right
All I ever dream about now
Is making love and the end of the world
As the buildings fall
September snow
Covers the ground
Helicopters abandon their calls
I’m lost in you arms
Far away from disaster
I never doubted life was good
I was raised a Christian girl
I believe in miracles
But standing here at the gates of hell
It’s harder watching September snow
And it does me in like tranquilizers
I’m lost in your arms
Naked and calm
Far away from disaster
As the buildings fall
September snow
Covers the ground
Helicopters abandon their calls
I’m lost in you arms
Far away from disaster
Far away from disaster
Far away from disaster
Far away from disaster

For years, I wrote songs that addressed 9/11. Every attempt seemed inauthentic. It was not until I removed myself from New York that the song took shape. Like so many, I watched 9/11 unfold on TV.
Afterward, during the never ending healing process, I thought the whole world was united in grief. If one good thing came from that awfulness, it was that surge of goodness.
I remember vividly thinking how the ash looked like snow. Peace and beauty contrasted with horror. It took less than an hour to write September Snow. I cried the whole time.
My music lawyer tried to get September Snow in the Oliver Stone movie about 9/11. While he was in LA negotiating, my jukebox play count for the song got stuck on 911!
Even though the song had a lot of support, we were too late to get it in the movie.
I’ve always believed this song deserved a broader audience.
